Featured Story - Friday the 13th
It was the Friday the 13th and the weather was not looking good. My friends from Atlanta came down to just spend some time on the water looking at waypoints we marked last year and man did they pay off. We started at 8:00AM on Valentine's day, but sat in the condo and watched it rain just wanting to get out on the water. With our eyes on the weather channel and looking a live doppler radar we saw a break in the weather pattern around 1PM, so we took our chance and left the dock. We pulled onto our first spot not marking much at all when we drifted to the southeast a little bit and then the Red fish bite hit all 4 rods in the boat. We had 4 Red Fish on at one time......WOW I shouted as I watched each person fight their fish. We got back on my waypoint in the same southeast pattern again and alot of the same happened....It was like we woke up the Reds at this spot. After catching 15 Red Fish we decided to look at a spot I had only 2 miles away and man did it pay off. I brought the boat over the spot only to find the same as the last spot. It appears the fish were not holding to the structure like they mainly due, Instead they were just feeding away from home. We dropped our lines 4 at a time and Brooke, dropping cut bait from a pogey and Steve dropping that same Pink butterfly jig pull up a set of 10LB snappers. These fish were identical to the eye and the scale says they same. The other side of the boat Lavern got broke off on a 30LB florocarbin leader. I knew we were on to something good here so I thought a minute and then got my plan of attack together. I knew i had to be drifting southeast and had to be off the spot a bit to get these feeding fish to bit. The second drop down we had 4 Red Snappers on with a total weight of 47LBS WOW! We spent the next hour on this spot with a total of 14 Red Snappers weighing over 170LBS. This was a great day with family and friends just out on the water having a great time. The Red Snapper population is in abundance in the Gulf of Mexico, and soon the season will be here soon so I’d advise all my fellow fisherman to just go out fishing, check on your spots and catch fish, because Snapper season will be here before you know it..
